Apollo 11
and its mission or goal
N.A.S.A's creation was directly related to the pressures of national defense. After World War II, the United States and the Soviet Union were engaged in the Cold War, a broad contest over the ideologies and allegiances of the nonaligned nations. During this period, space exploration emerged as a major area of contest and became known as the space race.
The primary objective of Apollo 11 was to complete a national goal set by President John F. Kennedy on May 25, 1961: perform a crewed lunar landing and return to Earth. Apollo 11 launched from Cape Kennedy on July 16, 1969, carrying Commander Neil Armstrong, Command Module Pilot Michael Collins and Lunar Module Pilot Edwin "Buzz" Aldrin.
This mission was one of the most significant events in the Space Race between the United States and the Soviet Union. First the U.S.S.R launched the Sputnik the first satellite and successfully sent mankind into space. Soon the United States wished to do the same and created Apollo 11 mission. This success made by U.S earned them a good win in the space race during the Cold War.
Apollo 11 was launched on July 16, 1969, from Cape Kennedy, and returned to Earth on July 24. They landed on the moon July 20 and stayed for about a little over twenty one hours. The crew of Apollo 11 landed in the Pacific Ocean on July 24, and arrived home to the cheers of a proud nation. Americans breathed a sigh of relief that they had finally won a “battle” in the Space Race.
The accomplishment of Apollo 11 was the event that proved to the U.S.S.R that the United States could hold their own in the fight for outer space. Although, Apollo 11 also brought a renewed sense of pride and accomplishment to a nation and unified the United States under a common goal.
In this Political Cartoon we're able to see that America practically is challenging Russia to try to beat them. After the landing of Apollo 11 U.S got more strengthened by the success as they were able to beat Russia one more time. U.S sends the message to Russia that nothing Russia does hurts them because the U.S is able to throw it right back at them.
